All the information that you might need you can find in the upcoming events section of the program Report. Following our Colgate event we have our Summer Season Coaches Conference. We will be offering both Aquatics and Track and Field certifications along with a general session, Re-certifications and an Around the Region section where we will give you the down low on what will be happening and a chance for you to give us some feedback. It is never to late to sign up. You can register at www.nyso.org, scroll down to the picture of NY and click on our region. You will find the Conference Registration in the top right corner.

The following weekend we will be holding our first Aquatics competition at Weedsport Central School. There is more information about the event in the Upcoming events section of the program report. We hope to see you there and see you support our athletes.

There will be a family information night for special needs families Thursday, April 2nd. There is more information provided in the upcoming events section so please make sure to check it out. It might be a valuable resource for you. If you would like me to send you the flyer please let me know and I will be more than happy to send it out to you. Thanks.

I have included our press release statement about President Obama's comment on Leno at the bottom of the report for those who are curious about our stand on the situation. We ask you to join in and support us.

I will be out of the office for the next two days due to surgery. I will be checking my email so I will be able to respond to any questions you might have. I hope your weekend is great, and don't forget your umbrellas, I heard it is suppose to rain.

~ NEW INFORMATION~

I know it is a little early but we have posted the demand case survey on the online file folder. We NEED you to fill it out and have it back to us by April 3rd. We understand that some of you might not have even started practice but we need you to just have some kind of idea of how many athletes you would like to bring. Please fill them out and send them to Sean Coakley at scoakley@nyso.org. Thank you for your cooperation.

~ Coaches, please chek www.specialolympics.org for updates on rules and regulations for your sport. There have been changes so please don't forget to re-educate yourself. Thank you.

~ ROSTERS ROSTERS ROSTERS ~

~ I can't say it enough coaches, we need those rosters. Once your first practice hits we will be looking for a roster shortly after. You might be asking, Meghan, why are you annoying us with your constant nagging of handing in rosters? Since you asked Coaches, we need your rosters to find out who is training in your training club. When I receive your roster I enter it in our data system. Once I enter them I check who is in need of an updated med and consent form and I am able to get those out to you. Also, headquarters uses the information on the rosters to replace the dreaded edit sheets and the information is used to help us apply for grants as well. We appreciate your help and cooperation!

~ COACHES CONFERENCE ~

Extra Extra Read all about it Coaches, the Coaches Conference has been set!

We will be holding the Conference at the North Area YMCA in Liverpool. It will be held Sunday March 29th from 9-1. We will be holding a general session in the morning and a recertification after. There will also be sports specific training in Aquatics and Track and Field. We will have full access to facilities at the Y, so you know what that means coaches. For those of you who will be training in Aquatics bring your swimsuits because you will be in the water. Those of you who are participating in track and field make sure to wear athletic clothing because you will be receiving a workout as well.

We will be unable to provide any refreshments but you are more than welcome to bring your own or bring something to pass. It is completely up to you. We apologize for the inconvenience.

You can register online at the central website. For those that I sent an email to about having to attend the conference make sure that you still register online. Thank you. We can't wait to see you there!!!

Now you ask is this coaches conference for me? As a matter of fact it is! Not only do you become certified at the conference you are also given the chance to be trained in another sport. In addition, we provide a section in the conference to update everyone and inform you of the events that will be taking place along with everything that might be happening int he central region and we also look for feedback. This is a great opportunity for our region to communicate with our coaches, make sure everyone is up to date and really learn some more about each other.

 THE CENTRAL REGION WISH LIST

STILL LOOKING FOR ANY WANTS OR NEEDS, DON'T BE SHY, YOU MIGHT GET WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR!!!!

After meeting with some of the coaches at the winter game feedback session, we decided to come up with a wish list box that will allow us as a region to utilize each other.

During the meeting we found out that there were certain items that people needed , i.e. fridge for state games. Since it is tough economic times we can't afford to be purchasing things that are not already marked in the budget, therefore, our brilliant Mr. Keith Haas came up with the idea of a wish list. If there is something that you as a coach or volunteer need or have for Special Olympic use please let us know and I will put it in this segment. That way as a region we can utilize each others resources and save on money.

Shoot me an email (mquinn@nyso.org) of your needs or haves and I will post them for everyone to view. If you would like to keep your contact information anonymous we will figure things out through me, but if you don't mind me posting your info then I will that way you can coordinate with each other.

Our Response to President Obama

MARCH 20, 2009
OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM SPECIAL OLYMPICS CHAIRMAN
TIMOTHY SHRIVER
REGARDING U.S. PRESIDENT OBAMA S COMMENT ON
THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO

President Obama called last night and expressed his regret and he apologized. He said that he did not intend to humiliate Special Olympics athletes or people with intellectual disabilities. He was sincere and heartfelt, and said that he is a fan of our movement and is ready to work with our athletes to make the United States a more accepting and welcoming country for all people with
special needs.

Words hurt and words matter. Words can cause pain and result in stereotypes that are unfair and damaging to people with intellectual disabilities. And using Special Olympics in a negative or derogatory context can be a humiliating put-down to people with special needs.

This is a teachable moment for our country. We are asking young people, parents and leaders from all walks of life to engage in conversation and help dispel negative caricatures about people with intellectual disabilities. We believe that it s only through open conversation and dialogue about how stereotypes can cause pain that we can begin to work together to create communities of acceptance and inclusion for all.

Special Olympics is not a program, but a worldwide movement operating 30,000 events a year in more than 180 countries. Every one of them is a chance for people of all ages to get involved, to think differently about attitudes and perceptions they may have about people with intellectual
disabilities, and to make a difference.

And so we challenge people to join our Spread the Word to End the Word campaign, a youth-led national awareness effort that will launch on March 31, where we are asking people to pledge their respect for people with special needs. We re asking people to sign our R-word pledge, to join in our Unified Sports programs, to volunteer, and to be fans of our athletes and our movement.

Additionally, we challenge policy leaders at all levels to commit to improving the support and resources for people with intellectual disabilities in areas such as healthcare, education, housing and recreation.

Finally, we invite the President to take the lead and consider hiring a Special Olympics athlete to work in the White House. In so doing, he could help end misperceptions about the talents and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities, and demonstrate their dignity and value to the world.

 Central Region Feedback

I thought I would include a segment in the program report about what was discussed during the feedback meeting. I obviously will not be able to write everything down but we would like to acknowledge some of the important topics.

~ We will be holding a coaches meeting before summer games this year where we can hand out all the information that  the coaches will need. At the meeting we will be able to discuss where we will be staying, the venues, the travel itinerary and event schedules. We will also be able to field any questions that coaches might have before we go off to state games. This way we are communicating everything you will need before summer games so no one feels like they are out of the loop.

~ The item of food was brought to our attention. There are some athletes  that have special diets and they usually have to bring their own food to state games. We have brought that to headquarters attention. Budget permitting we are not sure how much they can do, but they were informed and they will be trying their best to accommodate.

~ We heard the majority of people were thrilled with the Olympic village. We are very happy that it was a success and if you have any suggestions or feedback of what you really liked about it please let us know so we can continue to carry on the success to the next state games.

~ I was informed that when I send out an email with such content as "you need to hand something in" to take your name off the warning list once you send it in. That way we don't have confusion and the pressure is put on those who have not sent their information in yet.

~ Some athletes afraid of heights? We apologize to those who had to struggle to get their athletes up the bleachers at the closing ceremony basketball game. The fact that some athletes might be afraid of heights never crossed our minds. This information has been passed on to headquarters and will be taken into consideration from now on. Thank you for letting us know.

~ We were told that there were some events and some in the past that have not been run according to SOI rules. We have informed headquarters and we ask you to please inform the sports director at an event if the sports rules are being violated, that way we can fix the problem. We want all athletes to have a fair chance to win so please communicate with us when you see something wrong, thank you.

~ Finally, we were asked if there is the possibility to change the feature game at Summer games. Coaches would like to see a different team sport show cased. We agree with this and we let the Director of competition, Bryan Norris know and he will be doing the best he can.

Thank you to those that attended the meeting and provided us with such great feedback. It is information like this that makes us a tighter, more functioning organization. We appreciate it.

 THE NEW CENTRAL REGION

Central Region is getting a makeover and I am not talking about giving Sean some high lights and leopard print pumps, we are going to go electronic! We are going to start to use our central region website as a valuable source of information.

We want to get coaches, athletes and volunteers more involved with what is happening in the region and the best way to get our information out there is through our website. We want to post all of our training club information, conference information, upcoming events, direction, venue information and times, that way for those who do not receive my fabulous weekly updates can go to the website and find the information they might be looking for.

In addition to giving everyone access to more information we also want to highlight athletes and teams every week in a special section of the website. We will do this by having coaches send in information to us about a special athlete(s) that had a great week of practice or competition or even a team that overcame a tremendous step like learning a new play, breaking a record, or just showing great sportsmanship. We want to help promote healthy competition among our region along with acknowledgement for those that are doing a great job and really taking the Special Olympics mission to heart by developing physical fitness, demonstrating courage,  participating in a sharing of skills and friendship, gaining confidence and building a positive self-image.  With this highlight section we are hoping to gain all the above and to be able to provide a source for the athletes to go to and read, hopefully encouraging them to try even harder at the next practice. We will be looking for any suggestions as to what we should name the new section. We are looking for something fun so go ahead and shoot us some ideas.

We hope to spread the word of the new website but we ask for your help as well, if people ask for information please inform them as to where they can find it. We are hoping to have the improved sight running in a week or so, we will make sure to inform you.

Lastly, Coaches, volunteers and family, you are the ones that we are going to look to for suggestions as to what you would like to see on the website and what information you think would be useful. Please let us know. You can email Meghan at mquinn@nyso.org. Thank you for your support.
