| | | Program Report | June 1, 2009 | We had such a great weekend. Our final swimming meet for the Summer season took place in Rome at the Rome Free Academy. There was some really great competition that took place and we had an amazing set of volunteers that helped the event move along. I want to say a special thank you to Larry Kolwaite and Bob VanSchaick for putting all the time and effort into the event to make it such a success. I also want to thank Utica National for sponsoring our event, we were able to give our athletes a proper send off for the swimming season with their generous donation. Overall it was a great day, so thank you to everyone that was involved! This weekend we have our big Athletics event up at Oswego Middle School. We will have athletes participating from all around the region so it should be quite a close competition. Registration will be at 9am and competition to follow after. There have been a lot of questions of health concerns for Summer Games, so our Director of Competition, Bryan Norris, has addressed them with Binghamton University and there is a letter below that explains everything, if you have any questions please feel free to contact him at bnorris@nyso.org. He will be more than happy to help you out. Summer Games are right around the corner so please remember to send in the medical and consent forms that I asked for. There is an update in the coaches corner that all summer games coaches should check out. Lastly, I just want to say thank you to all of the coaches and volunteers for getting all your information in and registrations. We really appreciate you being on top of things and really working with us, you are making our jobs easier, thank you. Have a great week everyone! | | |

While it is not known what the ultimate scope of the outbreak will be, it does pose a concern to states, communities, as well as organizations like Special Olympics New York. The purpose of this email is to let you know the steps that Special Olympics New York (SONY) is taking to monitor the situation and to help safeguard our athletes, coaches, volunteers and employees. We understand that we are entering a season of high activity with regional games and the State Summer Games. Here are some proactive steps we are taking to reduce the risk of spreading the H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu): Proactive steps to Guard the 2009 State Summer Games from H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu) · SONY will be following the Broome County Health Department's guidance and recommendations to limit the spread of any virus. · Collaborating with the BinghamtonUniversity's Health Department regarding precautions to reduce the risk of spreading the H1N1 Virus. · Providing paper cups at water stations and encouraging everyone not to share water bottles. · Sending athletes, coaches and volunteers health tips on preventing the transmission of germs. · Distributing hand sanitizer in common areas where rest rooms are not in the immediate vicinity. · Encouraging all participants with flu-like symptoms to stay home or report to the medical facility immediately. · Reminding all coaches to diligently work with their athletes in practicing good hygiene. Each State Games we take the necessary steps in implementing strategies to limit the spread of any illnesses. These Summer Games will be different only with the increase in proactive publication and constant reminder for all involved to wash their hands. Please be more conscious of reminding everyone to practice good hygiene habits through out the weekend. Working together, we can all ensure a safe environment for the 2009 State Summer Games. See you in Binghamton, Bryan Norris Director of Competition | | |
