Dear Friends,

Hope your week is going well. The Summer Training club Schedule has been posted, please take a look at it. It is at the bottom of this newsletter.

This weekend we have our annual "Relay Fun Day" at Colgate University where our aquatics training clubs will be competing against each other for fun along with the Colgate University Varsity swim team. It is going to be a fun day, if you are in the area come out and support the athletes.

May 8th there is going to be a Spring Fling Dress up dance in Rochester at Pieters Family Life Center. It will be a night full of dancing, raffles, dessert and much much more. Tickets are $10 a person and the event will be from 7-9pm. If you are interested in attending please call 585-586-7400 ext. 100.

Art contest open to all athletes!

Special Olympics New York, Inc. is pleased to announce that we will be conducting another art contest to celebrate our 40th Anniversary during Summer Games. If chosen, your logo design will be featured on the 2010 State Summer Games T-shirt to be sold at the merchandise tent during the Games in June. The winner will receive a personalized Special Olympics New York jacket. Thank you for your participation!!!

Copper City Special Olympic Training Club will hold a Bowl-A-Thon and Chinese Auction at King Pin Lanes in Rome Saturday April 24th at 1:00 p.m. The minimum pledge for the Bowl-A-Thon is $25.00 which includes 3 games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, and door prizes. The Chinese Auction will include an authentic hockey jersey signed by the entire team of the Washington Capitals as well as other fantastic items generously donated by area merchants.

The funds raised will be used to purchase uniforms and training equipment for area Special Olympic Athletes. For information, bowling pledge sheets or tickets for the signed hockey jersey please call 339-6144 or 337-5023.

There has been an update in the Wish List, please take the time to look at it, thank you.

Coaches please make sure to hand in your rosters from the winter season if you have not done so already.

May 16th there will be a Golf Tournament at Valley View Golf Course in Utica to help benefit Special Olympic athletes. If you would like more information on the event please contact Laurie Kennedy at lkennedy@nyso.org.

COACHES PLEASE SEND IN YOUR SPRING/SUMMER GAMES SPORTS YOU COACH, INCLUDING WHEN, WHERE, WHAT TIME AND WHEN YOU BEGIN, THANK YOU.

ALL COACHES - If you have not done so already please send your rosters into me. We utilize rosters for many reasons such as keeping track of all of our athletes and what they are training in, medical information (if they are going to expire) and once they are entered into the system we are able to use the information to apply for grants, etc. They are very important so please turn them in as soon as possible. Thank you.

Larry Kolwaite is looking for an adult's swimming flotation belt (not a vest), preferably before the 27th of March. If you have one to spare please let me know and I will get you in contact with Larry, Thank you.

Dear Friends,

Hope your week is going well. The Summer Training club Schedule has been posted, please take a look at it. It is at the bottom of this newsletter.

Reminder committee members there will be a program committee meeting this Thursday at the NYSUT building in Syracuse starting at 5:45.

There has been an update in the Wish List, please take the time to look at it, thank you.

ATTENTION COACHES PLEASE REFER TO THE COACHES CORNER FOR COACHES CONFERENCE MATERIAL. THERE IS STILL TIME TO SIGN UP IT IS THIS SUNDAY!!!!!

Coaches please make sure to hand in your rosters from the winter season if you have not done so already.

The Central Region has signed up to walk in the St. Patricks Day Parade in Syracuse. The parade will be March 13th rain or shine and it will start at noon. If you are planning on attending please be there no later than 11:30. We encourage you to wear any Special Olympics gear and any medals or ribbons you have won throughout the years. We are placed in the front of the Wee division like usual and you will be meting in front of the National Grid Building.

The 5th annual Kirch Conference will be held at the HYATT Regency in Rochester this year on March 24th. It will focus on Planning and Living the Transition Years: Balancing Health, Relationships, Recreation, and Independence for Youth and Young Adults with Developmental Disabilities and the keynote speaker this year is Timothy Shriver. If you are interested please contact the hotel for more details.

We would like to introduce you to the newest member of the Central Region. February 14th Sean and his wife Kerrie were blessed with their first son Jack Aiden Coakley. He was 7 pounds 4 ounces and was born at 7:21am. Both parents are doing great and Jack is ADORABLE!

Special Olympics New York Winter games will be held in Syracuse this year. We will have events at different venues throughout the city including the Oncenter, Highland Forest, Thornden Park and Toggenburg Mountain. The games will be Feb 5th-6th. Winter games were wonderful! Everyone had a great time and Both of the hockey teams brought home gold, the first for our B team so congratulations! I would also like to send a congratulations to our other individual sport athletes, I heard stories about your accomplishments and we are very proud. good job Central Region!

Coaches, we will be having out winter season wrap up meeting this Thursday at the NYSUT building off of Brittonfield PKWY in East Syracuse. It will start at 5:30. Please let me know if you will be attending, thank you.

The Syracuse Crunch and the Crunch Foundation would like to offer a special ticket rate to Special Olympics athletes, families, staff and volunteers to the upcoming Mirabito Outdoor Classic on February 20, 2010. The Mirabito Outdoor Classic is the first-ever outdoor game for the American Hockey League (similar to the NHL Winter Classic recently held in Boston on New Year's Day)! And, the game will be held right here in Syracuse at the New York State Fairgrounds! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. As you all know, the winter games are quickly approaching. Please take the time to read an important message from the Vice President of Program, Steve Fuller, which can be found in the coaches corner.

Friday, December 18th the Syracuse Crunch will be facing off against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. The Crunch have invited us to attend the game as a Special Olympics awareness night. In addition, they will be promoting the State Winter Games. The Game starts at 7:30 pm. Those of you who reserved tickets can pick them up at the will call window on the State Street side entrance.

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend and had a good time with their friends and family. We have two very important events coming up this weekend. We will be hosting our annual Polar Plunges at Oneida Shores and Verona Beach. The information is down below in the upcoming events section, but we are calling all volunteers, if you would like to participate and/or volunteer please let me or Kim Smith at ksmith@nyso.org know, thank you.

This weekend, December 5th there will be a Christmas Dance for the Special Olympic Athletes at the Tyrol Club from 6:30-9:00. Admission will be $2 to get in and if you have a last name that begins with the letter M-Z please bring a snack. The address to the Tyrol Club is 213 Laymont Ave, Solvay.

Upcoming Events

DECEMBER

December 5th we will be holding our Polar Plunge at Oneida Shores in Brewerton. Registration will be a 9am and the plunge will be at 12:00. http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=319752 Please refer to the website for more information and to sign up.

December 6th there will be another Polar Plunge at Verona Beach State Park. Registration will be at 9am and the plunge will begin at 12:00. http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=316038 Please refer to the website for more information and to sign up.

If you are interested in plunging or setting up a team please contact Kim Smith at ksmith@nyso.org. She will be more than happy to help you out.

Coaches Corner

Coaches please send in your practice times and sports that you will be coaching for the winter season in to me. I would like to put together the Winter training schedule. thank you.
