Dear Friends,

This morning we kicked off our Pedals for Medals fundraiser. The bikers all met at the Skaneateles Community Center and drove up together to Saranac Lake where they will begin their ride through the North Country to Canton (Sean's old stomping grounds). They will spend the night there and ride through the back roads down to Watertown and the following day they will ride along Lake Ontario down to Oswego and to finish up the trip they will ride from Oswego to Skaneateles. Hopefully the weather holds out for them, it looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend so if you are in the area look for our cyclists on the roads and show some support! If you are looking for more inofrmation on where the cyclisits will actually be throughout their travel you can go to www.pedalsformedals.org and there is a  map and cues that you can look at.

Just a reminder, don't forget about the COED Softball Tournament that will be taking place at Cayuga Lake and also there will be a Firetruck Pull in August on the 8th. It will be held at Casey park. For more information on these two events please contact Mike Murray at murry@copscare.org.

The time has come again for the New York State Fair and we have been asked to walk in the parade again. We will be walking in the opening day parade which is August 27th. There are a limited amount of parking tickets and tickets so if you are interested in walking in the parade please contact me and reserve your tickets. The tickets are mainly for the athletes but we will reserve tickets for escorts as well. You can reserve your tickets by either calling me at 473-2933 or emailing me at mquinn@nyso.org. All of Central Region is welcome so we hope to see you there.

To all the athletes and parents please be aware that our Fall Schedule will be posted online soon and you will no longer be receiving schedules in the mail. If you know someone who would like to receive the schedule online please let me know so I can put them on my distribution list, thank you.

Have a great rest of the week!

Dear Friends,

 so logo

We had such a great weekend. Our final swimming meet for the Summer season took place in Rome at the Rome Free Academy. There was some really great competition that took place and we had an amazing set of volunteers that helped the event move along. I want to say a special thank you to Larry Kolwaite and Bob VanSchaick for putting all the time and effort into the event to make it such a success. I also want to thank Utica National for sponsoring our event, we were able to give our athletes a proper send off for the swimming season with their generous donation. Overall it was a great day, so thank you to everyone that was involved!

This weekend we have our big Athletics event up at Oswego Middle School. We will have athletes participating from all around the region so it should be quite a close competition. Registration will be at 9am and competition to follow after.

There have been a lot of questions of health concerns for Summer Games, so our Director of Competition, Bryan Norris, has addressed them with Binghamton University and there is a letter below that explains everything, if you have any questions please feel free to contact him at bnorris@nyso.org. He will be more than happy to help you out.

Summer Games are right around the corner so please remember to send in the medical and consent forms that I asked for. There is an update in the coaches corner that all summer games coaches should check out.

Lastly, I just want to say thank you to all of the coaches and volunteers for getting all your information in and registrations. We really appreciate you being on top of things and really working with us, you are making our jobs easier, thank you.

Have a great week everyone!

MESSAGE REGARDING HEALTH CONCERNS

5/22/09

Dear Athletes, Coaches, and Friends,

Undoubtedly, you have read and/or heard stories about the spread of the swine flu (Type H1N1 influenza) to numerous states, including New York.  While it is not known what the ultimate scope of the outbreak will be, it does pose a concern to states, communities, as well as organizations like Special Olympics New York.  The purpose of this email is to let you know the steps that Special Olympics New York (SONY) is taking to monitor the situation and to help safeguard our athletes, coaches, volunteers and employees.

We understand that we are entering a season of high activity with regional games and the State Summer Games. Here are some proactive steps we are taking to reduce the risk of spreading the H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu):

Proactive steps to Guard the 2009 State Summer Games from H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu)

·          SONY will be following the Broome County Health Department's guidance and recommendations to limit the spread of any virus.
·          Collaborating with the BinghamtonUniversity's Health Department regarding precautions to reduce the risk of spreading the H1N1 Virus.
·          Providing paper cups at water stations and encouraging everyone not to share water bottles.
·          Sending athletes, coaches and volunteers health tips on preventing the transmission of germs.
·          Distributing hand sanitizer in common areas where rest rooms are not in the immediate vicinity.
·          Encouraging all participants with flu-like symptoms to stay home or report to the medical facility immediately.
·          Reminding all coaches to diligently work with their athletes in practicing good hygiene.

Each State Games we take the necessary steps in implementing strategies to limit the spread of any illnesses.  These Summer Games will be different only with the increase in proactive publication and constant reminder for all involved to wash their hands.  Please be more conscious of reminding everyone to practice good hygiene habits through out the weekend.  Working together, we can all ensure a safe environment for the 2009 State Summer Games.
See you in Binghamton,

Bryan Norris
Director of Competition

Dear Friends,

 so logo

Wow what a great weekend of competition and fundraising. We had our Super Regional Basketball tournament in Waterloo on Saturday. The venue was amazing and the competition was even better. From what I heard from the coaches and what I saw, our athletes had an amazing time and a great experience. I want to thank everyone that was involved in setting up the event because it was very well run and a great day overall. There was also a Super Regional Powerlifting event that took place in Marcellus on Saturday. Sean told me that everything went smoothly and that he couldn't even lift half the weight some of those athletes were lifting, well technically he did not say that but I am thinking its the truth.

On Sunday our region hosted "A Very Special Walk" and raised over $4,600 and counting. That is truly amazing. It was a brisk cold day but our athletes, volunteers and friends were troopers and still came out to support Special Olympics. The food was amazing and the DJ made the whole event a lot of fun. I want to send out a special thank you to everyone that donated, participated and helped plan the event. It is people like you that keep our organization running, so thank you again. There is a special Note from Laurie Kennedy at the bottom, please take note of it, thank you.

We do not have any events for this weekend but the following weekend, May 30th we have our big swimming send off, the last swimming competition before state games. It will be held at the RFA in Rome. We are very lucky to be sponsored by Utica National at the event so we would also like to send out a special thank you to them for sponsoring our athletes and supporting Special Olympics.

Coaches please take note that the Coaches Corner has been updated. There have also been updates throughout the report so please don't forget to look through the whole thing. Thank you.

Have a great week everyone!

 Letter from Laurie Kennedy

On behalf of everyone at Special Olympics New York in the Central Region, I want to thank you for your participation in the Very Special Walk.  Together, we raised $4800!  Such generous effort on your part allows us to fulfill our mission of providing cost-free sports training and competition for the athletes in Central New York State that participate in Special Olympics New York programs and to bring our services to an increasing number of athletes and families.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR TOP FUNDRAISERS:
Becky Retchless               $675
Kayla McKeon                $550
Kristin Davia                  $370
Jamie Clark-Bryan            $349.50

And Kudos to those athletes who traveled from other parts of the region to walk!

It is the Power of family.Every family with a Special Olympics athlete has a special story to tell - some difficult, some heartwarming - but all powerful. The child who was told he or she could not until he/she joined Special Olympics and not only was it fun, it proved what he/she was capable of doing. Uplifting stories about siblings who have unselfishly relinquished the spotlight, or parents who believe their sons and daughters can set goals and reach them. You families support and cheer our athletes on. You provide hope, you love, and you sacrifice.  Special Olympics reinforces everything you do to encourage the ability of your child and your voice can help us to continue and to grow.

Special Olympics New York deeply appreciates your story and your energy to help support the 2009 sports seasons.  In the Central Region, Special Olympics New York provides competitive opportunities including individual games at schools, in sport seasons and in Regional and State Games Competitions throughout New York

All contributions help us sustain our impact on so many athletes and build new programs for their use.  Through your essential support, we can assist our athletes in gaining confidence and independence which they carry into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community.

Again, I cannot thank you enough.

Laurie

*** Coaches, if I have sent you an email about your athlete's med and consent forms, please check your meds and make sure that you have all the updated forms, if not please email me right away and let me know.

~ Coaches, please chek www.specialolympics.org for updates on rules and regulations for your sport. There have been changes so please don't forget to re-educate yourself. Thank you.

~ ROSTERS ROSTERS ROSTERS ~

~ I can't say it enough coaches, we need those rosters. Once your first practice hits we will be looking for a roster shortly after. You might be asking, Meghan, why are you annoying us with your constant nagging of handing in rosters? Since you asked Coaches, we need your rosters to find out who is training in your training club. When I receive your roster I enter it in our data system. Once I enter them I check who is in need of an updated med and consent form and I am able to get those out to you. Also, headquarters uses the information on the rosters to replace the dreaded edit sheets and the information is used to help us apply for grants as well. We appreciate your help and cooperation!

To:                   Athletes, Families, Volunteers, and Friends

From:              Neal J. Johnson, President & CEO

Subject:          2009 Summer Games
____________________________________________________________________

I'm sure you are all aware of the economic challenges we are facing.  As I mentioned in my previous letter, our organization has had to budget expenses to match a very conservative development outlook.  To ensure that we meet our financial needs, unfortunately we have had to change the shape of Summer Games.  This proved to be very difficult, knowing we were going to disappoint a lot of people.

This year's Summer Games 2009 will see a reduction in the total number of athletes by 35% and only one day of competition.  With a smaller time frame for competition, making this reduction evenly across every sport brings a number of events to a level where quality competition will not exist.  To preserve a portion of our larger events, we moved the allocations from some of the low participation sporting events.  We also needed to keep in mind that with one day of competition, our larger events would not be able to sustain full participation while maintaining quality competition.  With that said here is what events will make up the 2009 Summer Games:

Aquatics - 100% participation*                              Basketball Team - 80% participation*
Basketball Skills - 100% participation*                 Volleyball Team - 0% participation*
Powerlifting - 100% participation*                         Volleyball Skills - 0% participation*
Tennis - 100% participation*                                  Gymnastics - 0% participation*
Athletics - 85% participation*                                 Bowling - 0% participation*

*based on 2008 Summer Games Participation

I appreciate your understanding during these unprecedented times.  It was with no great ease that these decisions were reached.  The reductions to Summer Games were made very carefully and strategically.  In spite of our economic environment, we look forward to the great competitions we will see all around the state this spring.  It is essential for us all to do what we can to continue moving forward with our mission.

Program Report

April 14, 2009

Dear Friends,

 so logo

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Holiday weekend. Sean is back in town so if you had any questions you were holding for him you can ask him now.

We have some good events coming up in the next couple of weeks so please check out the upcoming events section and mark those calendars.

At the bottom of the program report I have posted a statement from Neal Johnson about state games this year. Unfortunately due to rough economic times there were some cuts made for Summer games so please refer to the posted letter below for more information. If you have any questions we will do the best to help answer them. Thank you Coaches, Family and Friends for your understanding in this matter.

We have a new fundraiser coming up and we also have some entries in the wish list section so please check them out. Have a great rest of the week and coaches if you have not done so already please send your rosters in. I will be sending out another email to those who have not gotten theres in yet. Thank you for all your cooperation

Best Regards,

Meghan Quinn

*** Coaches, if I have sent you an email about your athlete's med and consent forms, please check your meds and make sure that you have all the updated forms, if not please email me right away and let me know. Our goal is no expired med forms for Summer games!*****

 THE CENTRAL REGION WISH LIST

NEED

We have a need for a large sports duffel bag. One of our basketball coaches is looking for one to tote cones, medicine balls and such in. He is also loking for an automatic pump to pump up basektballs. Lastly, he is also looking for some newer basketballs if any are available and some cones. If anyone has something available for him to use, even if it is just for the season, please contact me and we will get him all set up.

Shoot me an email (mquinn@nyso.org) of your needs or haves and I will post them for everyone to view. If you would like to keep your contact information anonymous we will figure things out through me, but if you don't mind me posting your info then I will that way you can coordinate with each other.
